Tight security in Amritsar ahead of Bluestar anniversary

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Punjab Police are working in tandem to ensure that Operation Bluestar anniversary on June 6 passes off peacefully.

Given the bloody clashes that marked the anniversary, the SGPC is mulling a number of steps, including the possibility of restrictions on weapons inside the Golden Temple complex. However, kirpan will remain exempted.

The SGPC will also deploy members of its task force in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.

Amritsar Police officials also held meetings with SGPC to coordinate the security deployment. As per reports, over 100 police personnel will be out on the streets on that day.

The concerns about law and order also stems from the call for a bandh in Amritsar by radical Sikh outfit Dal Khalsa.

The outfit said to mark the the Operation, a parade will also be undertaken on tomorrow.

"The pain of the attack is still fresh and the wounds of the attack still simmer," the outfit's spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said.

However, the police maintain that no one will be allowed to forcibly close shops and establishments in the city.
