Now, disposable mini-drones to track forest fires

Washington: Two disposable mini-drones have been designed to keep a track of potential forest fires.

Led by Paul Pounds from the University of Queensland, a team of roboticists has created two new mini-drone designs, a paper airplane and a maple seed, to help record atmospheric conditions in the event of a forest fire.

The new designs made of biodegradable cellulose material eliminate the need for expensive landing systems.

The disposable, self-steering drones are essentially sensor modules that can be dropped over a forested area to relay environmental data that could indicate potential for fire.
