28 militants killed in fresh clashes in northern Lanka

At least 28 LTTE militants and a soldier were killed in a spate of clashes in the restive northern Sri Lanka, the Army said here today.

Ten Tamil Tiger cadres were killed in Adampan in North-western Mannar yesterday, while five militants were shot dead and a soldier injured in a gunbattle at Parappakandal in Mannar.

In Northern Jaffna, security forces recovered 47 anti-personnel mines during a search operation in Ponnal area, it said.

In Muhamalai in Jaffna peninsula, at least two LTTE militants were killed in a confrontation yesterday, the defence ministry said adding adding one soldier was also injured in the incident.

In Vavuniya, four LTTE cadres were killed in Umayarattuvaran area and six of them in Kaduruvittankulam .

One tiger militant was killed in a in a confrontation in Welioya on Friday, the ministry said.

Troops recovered nine Arul bombs from Periyathampane in Vavuniya in a search operation yesterday, the army said.

Meanwhile, a soldier was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion during a search operation in Kaduruvittankulam area in Vavuniya yesterday.

Troops in Adampan retaliated when LTTE militants fired artillery yesterday, the army said adding a soldier was killed and four injured in the artillery fire by the tiger rebels.
