B’desh launches diplomatic campaign to track down fugitives

B’desh launches a diplomatic campaign to track down and extradite 6 fugitive ex-Army officers hiding abroad to escape death sentences.

Dhaka: Bangladesh has launched a diplomatic campaign to track down and extradite six fugitive former army officers hiding abroad to escape death sentences in connection
with the assassination of the country`s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"The diplomatic maneuvering is underway to get back the
convicts home... Bangladesh will do everything necessary to
bring the killers to justice," Foreign Minister Dipu Moni
told.

Her comments came as the appeal hearing in the murder
trail is set to resume soon.

Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes said
Bangladeshi missions abroad were equipped with necessary
directives about the fugitives but refused to comment about
their whereabouts due to the "sensitivity of the issue".

He also parried questions on whether all the fugitives
have been tracked down.

"I can assure you, at the end of the day the killers
will be brought to justice," he said.

The comments by the Foreign Minister and Foreign
Secretary comes as the country is set to commemorate later
this week the 34th anniversary of the assassination of Rahman,
also the father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
