Former Nepalese PM Thapa to be accorded state funeral

Nepal will accord a state funeral to five-time Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa, who passed away in India battling cancer, and a national holiday has been declared tomorrow to mourn his demise.

The final rites of the 87-year-old Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman will be held tomorrow with full state honours, ekantipur.Com reported today.

An emergency meeting of the party Central Committee today decided to perform Thapa's final rites tomorrow evening.

Thapa, who served as Nepal's prime minister for a record five times - three times during Panchyat regime and twice after multi-party democracy was established in 1990, passed away last night at a private hospital in Gurgaon where he was undergoing treatment for stomach cancer.

He formed the Rastriya Prajatantra Party after the establishment of democracy and was the oldest member of Nepal's Constituent Assembly which is currently drafting a constitution.
