Islamabad: Pakistan has repeated calls for international aid to fight terrorism in the country.
National Assembly speaker Fehmida Mirza said it is high time for the international community and Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FODP) to fulfil their promises to support Pakistan in its efforts to eliminate terrorism and rehabilitate displaced people in the wake of anti-terror operations.
She made the remarks during her meeting with the visiting head of UN delegation, Jean-Maurice Ripert, special envoy of the UN secretary general to support the humanitarian work in Pakistan, at the Parliament House here on Thursday, the Online news agency reported.
The speaker said military operations against insurgents were supported by the entire nation and Parliament. She said there was an urgent need to start developmental works in the tribal and other areas affected by the anti-insurgency operations.
Ripert said the world community was impressed with the success of the military operation in Swat and it will help Pakistan to undertake developmental works. He said from next year the UN would start a USD 1 billion programme to help the displaced people.
