In Pak, prisoners can call loved ones free of cost

Convicts and under-trial prisoners, confined in 32 jails across Pakistan`s Punjab province, can now call their loved ones free of cost over landlines.

Lahore: Convicts and under-trial prisoners, confined in 32 jails across Pakistan`s Punjab province, can now call their loved ones free of cost over landlines.

IG Mian Farooq Nazeer said the pilot project was being launched on a trial basis at Central Jail, Bahawalpur, and Women`s Jail in Multan. He said prisoners would be provided with a computerised landline telephone facility to make calls to their dear ones for 15 minutes after every 15 days, reports the Daily Times.

"Calls will be made during office hours only in the presence of special staff deployed there," Nazeer said, adding that police would maintain record of all outgoing calls while incoming calls would be blocked on all landlines. Nazeer said his department would bear the expenses of all PCOs to be installed under this pilot project. He added that if the project remains successful, its network would be extended to other jails.
"During execution of this project, security in and around jails will be given top priority and no compromise will be made in this regard," he said.
