Colombo: Sri Lanka`s detained ex-army chief
Sarath Fonseka has suspended his fast unto death after the
military allowed him to speak to his daughters using his
wife`s mobile phone.

59-year-old Fonseka, who is being detained at the Naval
Headquarters here following his arrest on conspiracy charges
on February 8, spoke to his two daughters, settled abroad, at
11 pm (local time) last night, a close relative of the General
told preferring anonymity.

He had launched the fast on Sunday, demanding that he be
allowed to talk to his daughters over his wife Anoma`s phone.

He yesterday rejected the telephone provided by the
army and insisted that he would speak to his children only
through his wife`s mobile phone.

Anoma last night visited Fonseka and gave him dinner
at the detention facility, the General`s relative said.

Fonseka, who unsuccessfully contested the January 26
Presidential Polls against incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa, is now
heading the JVP-dominated opposition alliance DNA.
