LTTE training centres in India: Sri Lankan PM

LTTE training centres in India: Sri Lankan PM Colombo: Remnants of Sri Lanka's defeated Tamil rebels are undergoing military training in India in a bid to revive their separatist campaign at home, the island's Prime Minister said on Wednesday.

DM Jayaratne said an unknown number of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fighters were based at secret camps in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

"We have intelligence reports of three clandestine training centres operated by the LTTE in Tamil Nadu," the Prime Minister said in a statement.

He said the rebels, who were defeated by Sri Lankan government troops in May 2009, were hoping to re-launch their decades-long fight for an independent homeland in the island.

"Their next target is to create small-scale attacks," Jayaratne said. "The entire nation must be ready to face this threat."

No rebel attacks have been launched since the Tigers were wiped out, but the Premier told Parliament on Wednesday that the country needed to maintain tough emergency laws to deal with their possible resurgence.

Sri Lanka has resisted international calls to end emergency laws, which are routinely approved by Parliament.

The United Nations estimates that up to 100,000 people died in the ethnic conflict which lasted from 1972 until 2009.

The opposition accuses the government of using emergency laws to stifle political dissent and the media, charges denied by the authorities.

Indian govt must take this seriously and investigate if there is any truth in it. There are terrorist outfits and nexals have camps here & LTTE has good financial source to carryout it`s activities any where & they can even join hands with nexals operating india. so we cannot totally overlook this issue. at the same time SL govt is also answerable for attack on our fishermen. FM must take up this issue for SL govt.

The timing of this statement is very interesting. The present PM is not an anti-India type, but one should keep in mind that most of the political leadership in Colombo is not happy with DMK and buddies who have sympathy with LTTE. Now elections are close in TN and there is bitter relation between DMK and Congress, who is doing a good job at the center, in contrast to its regional friend. DMK is not likely to return to power on its own, and such a statement is in the spirit to create problem in Congress and DMK alliance. A nonDMK govt. in TN is definitely going to be big blow to LTTE, which can expect some level of support with DMK leadership.

I completely agree with KP. If any camp do exist, it should once be removed and guilty person punished. India should let the International Community know it clearly that they will not tolerate Terrorism.

The SL PM is just playing politics. He wants to continue with the oppressive emergency laws in the Tamil regions of SL. He is making up these stories so that he can justify those laws. Why doesn`t he mention the exact location of the camps to the govt. of India?

If any such training camp exists in India, it should be our prime concern to destroy it and kill or arrest who ever is found guilty of running such a camp, irrespective of political leaders or any other personnel involved in such anti national activity of any country should not be spared. Jai Hind

Another disgrace to the nation brought by none other than Congress government. If the PM of Srilanka is issuing the statement in their parliament, there would be certainly some substance in it. It report becomes more convincing when we know DMK has been supporting LTTE and the coallition pressure would have forceed the central govt to keep their eyes and ears closed on such camps. If it is so, its grossly wrong. Look at the turnaround, Gandhi family now keeping mum and supporting LTTE just coz to remain in power and addiction of Money. The blood has gone cold. Now you can hear the quick denail. Congress Party, Don`t fiddle with the history and the tradition of our country, which has always prophesied peace , love and tranquility.
