Kathmandu: In a bid to topple the present coalition government, Nepal`s main opposition party, the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M) has started collecting signatures of its lawmakers to register a no-trust motion against the government.
The party yesterday started collecting signatures of its 238 lawmakers at Parliamentary Party office in Singhdurbar to bring a no-confidence motion against the government in a special session of the Parliament, sources close to the party said.
However, senior politburo member of the UCPN-M and the foreign department chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that they have not yet decided to bring the no-trust motion in Parliament against the coalition.
The position of the present government has been weakened and there is a need to seek some alternative to it, he said.
He said, "There is no immediate plan on their part to bring the no-trust motion against the government. We are assessing the situation and we will discuss with other parties before taking any such decision".
“We are not in a position to register no-trust motion on our own, he said, adding that the support from the ruling parties themselves has dwindled in favour of the government.”
The UCPN-M which has more than two third seats in the 601 member Constituent Assembly, needs the support from other smaller parties as well as the Madhesi parties for passing the motion.
However, the government`s position has been weakened as the law and order situation in the capital worsened with the killing of two media entrepreneurs one in Kathmandu and the other in southern Nepal`s Janakpur recently.
The government is being criticised not only on the law and order ground but also in its slow process of drafting the new Constitution.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress held a crucial central body meeting yesterday to discuss about the strategy in order to deal with the emerging new situation after the Maoists were mulling the idea of bringing the no-trust motion against the government.
