Several Buddhist monks will hold overnight prayers at the Sri Lankan Parliament complex ahead of the first sitting of the new house on April 22.

Colombo: Several Buddhist monks will hold overnight prayers at the Sri Lankan Parliament complex ahead of the first sitting of the new house on April 22.

"An all night Pirith chanting at the Parliament complex will be held on April 18," an official report said.

The religious observances are held in connection with the opening of Parliament on April 22, it said.

The Parliamentary Employees Buddhist Association (EBP) is organising the event.

The Parliamentary Secretary General, in a special statement, asked all newly elected legislators and the staff to join in these rituals.

These events will take place under the patronage of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka parliament authorities are making all the necessary arrangements to welcome the newly elected members for the opening session of the 7th parliament (under the new 1978 constitution) next week.

An Information Desk has been established in the parliamentary complex to facilitate the arrangements for the first meeting .

The Secretary-General has asked all parliamentarians to attend the orientation process as the arrangements have been made to provide vital information and various documents at the Information Desk, a report said.

The new Sri Lankan cabinet will be sworn in after the results of Kandy and Trincomalee elections to be held on April 20, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Maithripala Sirisena said.
