Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan on Thursday slammed the Pakistani government for the chaos in the country and ruled out supporting martial law.
Calling on Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to resign, Khan said that early elections were the only way out of the country`s current crisis.
"I have been hearing `go Zardari go` slogans. If you are serious, then resign from the Assembly and there will be an automatic situation for elections," Khan said.
"System will not be derailed if this government goes," he said, adding, "We don`t back a military takeover. We are for free and fair elections. People do not want dictatorship, they want a democratic system".
On Wednesday, Gilani sacked defence secretary Lt Gen(retd) Naeem Khalid Lodhi, raising fears of a coup.
Accusing the present Pakistan government for affecting democracy in the worst possible fashion, Khan said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was a puppet of President Zardari.
The tensions are brewing between military and Pakistani leadership in the wake of the memo scandal.
The PTI chief also slammed the government for not abiding by the Supreme Court’s decision of striking down National Reconciliation Ordinance in 2009.
The ruling Pakistan People’s Party has expressed disappointment at the Supreme Court’s order on reopening graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Khan said court verdicts are not ignored in democracies, noting that democracy in Pakistan is in peril.
