New Delhi: As India observed the second anniversary of Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday said his country is committed to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai terror attacks to justice.
"Pakistan has condemned the Mumbai incident in the past and continues to do so today. Two years have passed since the incident and it is our wish that those people who were involved in this incident should be brought to justice," Qureshi told reporters in the central city of Multan.
He further said Interior Minister Rehman Malik had sent "some proposals" to India to facilitate progress in the process of bringing suspects linked to the Mumbai attacks to justice.
He did not give details about the proposals.
Earlier in the day, Home Minister P Chidambaram said Pakistan has not fulfilled its promise to bring the masterminds of Mumbai terror attacks to justice and hoped it will realise its responsibility as a nation and take action against them.
"In Pakistan, we have a neighbour who has not fulfilled its promise to bring 26/11 masterminds to justice. We have learnt a lesson that while we will always trust our neighbour, we must always be on guard," Chidambaram said on the sidelines of a function here.
"I sincerely hope that on the second anniversary of this horrific tragedy, Pakistan will realise its responsibility as a nation, as a government and fulfil its promises to bring to justice those who perpetrated the attacks," he said.
Qureshi also said that Pakistan "will not provide backing to any organisation that is linked to terrorism”.
Persons linked to or responsible for the Mumbai incident "should be punished in a legal manner and while remaining within the law”, he said.
"The Pakistan government has been in touch with India and we have exchanged information and many dossiers. We have taken information from them and given them information," Qureshi said in response to a question.
"We want to remain peaceful and we have an interest in peace and stability in this region. We want good neighbourly and friendly relations with India," he added.
At the same time, Qureshi acknowledged that Pakistan had "issues" with India that the world was aware of.
"These issues include Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek and water. We have told (India) we are ready to sit together to resolve these issues peacefully through talks. It is our desire that there should be progress in this too," he said.
The attacks, which began on November 26, 2008, and lasted three days, targeted Mumbai`s main railway station, tourist destinations, a Jewish centre and two hotels.
India blamed the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group and demanded immediate action against those involved. Pakistan arrested seven suspects, including the alleged mastermind, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.
