Pak court seeks explanation on Malik`s acquittal plea

A Pakistani court on Saturday sought responses from authorities to an application filed by Interior Minister Rahman Malik seeking acquittal in two anti-corruption cases.

Karachi: A Pakistani court on Saturday sought responses from authorities to an application filed by Interior Minister Rahman Malik seeking acquittal in two anti-corruption cases.
The judge of the accountability or anti-corruption court issued notices seeking responses from officials of the National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan`s main anti-graft agency, by January 30.

Malik`s counsel Khwaja Naveed Ahmed filed the application seeking his acquittal under the Criminal Procedure Code on the ground that all other co-accused had been exonerated and there was no cogent evidence against the minister.

The judge reserved his order on another application filed by Malik seeking exemption from appearing in court for hearings.

Malik, who appeared in the court, told the judge he has security concerns as he is on top of the hit list of terrorist groups.

Ahmed told the court that jihadi elements have announced a reward for militants who could harm Malik.

Under these circumstances, Malik should be exempted from attending the hearings, he said.

Malik was booked on charges of abusing his official position as head of the Federal Investigation Agency in the late 1990s and causing losses to the national exchequer.
