Pakistan to release senior Taliban commander Mullah Baradar today

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, former Afghan Taliban second-in-command, will be released from a Pakistan prison on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry revealed on Friday.

Islamabad: Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, former Afghan Taliban second-in-command, will be released from a Pakistan prison on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry revealed on Friday.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Baradar will be released to further facilitate the Afghan reconciliation process. However, it is yet not confirmed where he will be sent after his release.

Baradar was arrested from Karachi in 2010 by CIA and Pakistani agents in a secret raid. He was one among those who founded the Taliban movement in Afghanistan in 1994.

According to ministry sources, Pakistan has released more than 20 Taliban prisoners in the past one year.

During his visit to Islamabad last month, Afghanistan`s President Hamid Karzai had asked Pakistan to facilitate peace talks between his country and the Taliban.
