Pakistani forces kill 60 Taliban rebels

Pakistani forces killed 60 rebels in fierce clashes in the volatile Orakzai tribal region of northwest Pakistan.

Peshawar: Pakistani forces in pursuit of
militants who fled a clampdown in Waziristan killed 60 rebels
in fierce clashes in the volatile Orakzai tribal region of
northwest Pakistan Wednesday.

The clashes took place in the areas of Dabori and Saam
in the tribal belt in which two soldiers were killed and about
20 security personnel injured, security officials said.

The Pakistani forces are conducting a major campaign
to flush out Taliban fighters from the area as they suspect
that large number of rebels have taken shelter in the region
to escape the army crackdown in Waziristan.

The security officials claimed about 40 militants were
also injured in today`s fighting, which marked the latest in a
series of clashes in Orakzai Agency.

On Sunday, over 60 militants were killed and several
dozens injured in clashes with the security forces in Kurram
and Orakzai tribal regions.

The security forces have launched a major campaign in
the area for over six weeks and claimed over 700 militants
have been killed.

The forces are using helicopter gunships and heavy
artillery to flush out the Taliban from their well fortified
hideouts in the area.
