Pakistani troops killed 27 Taliban fighters during operations in Orakzai.

Peshawar: Pakistani troops killed 27 Taliban fighters during operations in the restive Orakzai tribal region in the country`s northwest on Saturday.

The militants were killed during a gun battle that erupted between security forces and the Taliban in Dar Saam area of Orakzai Agency, security sources said.

Two security personnel were injured in the clash. The bodies of the militants are in custody of the security forces, the sources said.

The Taliban have mounted several attacks on troops in Orakzai Agency during the past few days.

The military launched an offensive in the region in mid-March to flush out rebels.

Security officials claim artillery barrages and air strikes have killed over 700 rebels during the past two months though the figure cannot be independently confirmed.
