Kathmandu: An international media
watchdog has expressed concern over attacks on journalists in
Nepal, saying such incidents have reached an extremely
worrying level in the country.

Reporter Without Borders (RSF) has condemned the
attacks against journalists in the beginning of 2011 and asked
the authorities to take necessary steps to end this.

"We call on the authorities to do everything to end
these attacks, prevent a culture of impunity taking hold and
dissipate the permanent feeling of insecurity which acts as
brake on the creation of a free press, the RSF said in its
recent statement.

"Nepal has reached an extremely worrying level of
attacks on the media, mostly the responsibility of political
parties and religious groups," pointed out the organisation.

Two Nepalese journalists, Arjun Jamneli Rai and Bibek
Bhattarai had to stop their works after receiving death
threats, according to the watchdog.

On February 7, Baburam Raymajhi of Radio Buddha Awas
was wounded in an attack by an unidentified group. On February
6, another journalist was wounded in a similar attack.

The same day Milan Pariyar, correspondent of national
daily Naya Patrika, was attacked for articles published a
month earlier.
