Speed up Constitution drafting, UN tells Nepal

The UN on Friday said Nepal needs to speed up the process of Constitution drafting and work for strengthening fundamentals of good governance.

Kathmandu: The United Nations on Friday said Nepal needs to speed up the process of Constitution drafting and work for strengthening fundamentals of good governance, even as Deputy Premier Sujata Koirala asked the world body to continue its assistance to the peace process.
On the eve of the UN Day, marking the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator Robert Piper underlined the need to progress on Constitution drafting, fulfilling Millennium Development Goals, releasing minors from cantonments and abiding by the Peace Agreement.

"Reversing Nepal`s rising inequality, bringing historically marginalised groups onto an equal footing, tackling impunity and strengthening fundamental elements of good governance like accountability and transparency will be the work of the current generation," he said.

Koirala on her part asked the UN and the international community to continue to assist the peace process in Nepal.

"I urge the UN and the international community to continue their support and assistance to accomplish the task of consolidation of peace process and to strengthen democracy in the country and also to move the country towards economic progress," she said addressing the UN Day function organised by the UN System in Nepal here.

Appreciating the role played by the UN in facilitating the ongoing peace process in her country, she said Nepal will continue to assist the world body by participating in the UN peace keeping missions abroad.
