Colombo: Sri Lanka`s top judge Shirani Bandaranayake, who is facing impeachment in the parliament after a tiff with the Rajapaksa government, today refuted charges of financial impropriety against her.
The 54-year-old Chief Justice had a motion of impeachment presented against her in parliament, containing 14 charges.
Through letters addressed to the media by her lawyers, she declared that there was no financial impropriety on her part.
"She will as always continue to duly and properly discharge her duties without fear or favour; she will do so independently, impartially and fearlessly on accordance with the law", her lawyers stated.
The motion came after months of friction between the judiciary and the state.
The Supreme Court headed by Bandaranayake delivered several determinations adverse to the government which added to the dispute.
The Supreme Court ruling on the unconstitutionality of several key government bills had angered the government to move against Bandaranayake, the island nation`s first woman head of the judiciary.
A Parliamentary Select Committee would soon examine charges against her.
