Washington: A US General has recommended Pentagon to release as many as 400 of the 600 prisoners at the detention facility at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, the latest news report said.
Maj General Doug Stone, who prepared a 700-page report, was sent to Afghanistan early this summer to do a review of the US-run Bagram detention facility which has mostly Afghan inmates.
In his report yesterday, said the popular National Public Radio, Stone recommended that the US military and Afghan government revamp the detention system, focusing on rehabilitation rather than the warehousing of prisoners.
He outlined his views to the top commander in Afghanistan, Gen Stanley McChrystal; the Special US Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, and the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"Right now, we are evaluating courses of actions about how we move forward," Lt Cmdr Bill Speakes, a Central Command spokesman, told NPR.
Human right groups have been very critical of the Bagram detainees, which has also been a source if growing anger among Afghans.
