Chennai civic polls: Over 10,000 cops on duty

A total of over 10,000 police personnel, will be engaged for the two-phase civic polls in the city.

Chennai: A total of over 10,000 police
personnel, including top-level officers will be engaged for
the two-phase civic polls in the city, as police warned of
stringent action against poll-time violence.

With the first phase of polling scheduled tomorrow, a total
of 1905 polling booths have been identified as `sensitive`. In
more than 400 such booths, special police pickets have been
posted to instill confidence in the public.

"In total,391 Striking Forces from the rank of Commissioner
of Police to Inspectors are given which covers all over
Chennai to meet any eventuality," a city police release said.

After the poll notification was issued, 102 persons had
been detained under Goondas Act, while "preventive action" has
been taken against 1367 rowdies and criminals, it said.

"A total of 567 cases of violation of model code of
conduct have been registered against all parties," it said
adding round the clock checks are being held in lodges while
marriage halls would be brought under police control.

"Stringent action will be taken against whoever indulges in
any violence during the day of poll. Vehicles of candidates
alone with official permission will be allowed near polling
booths ," it said.

Apart from the main control rooms, mini control rooms have
also been formed for the public to lodge complaints, the
release added.
