Detonators, illicit liquor seized in poll-bound Tamil Nadu

The Election Commission-appointed flying squads here have seized 9,000 detonators, 3,623 litres of illicit liquor and other freebies suspected to be used for luring voters for the upcoming Assembly polls in the state.

Chennai: The Election Commission-appointed
flying squads here have seized 9,000 detonators, 3,623 litres
of illicit liquor and other freebies suspected to be used for
luring voters for the upcoming Assembly polls in the state.

The detonators were seized from a vehicle in Salem
district recently.

The squads, comprising enforcement and police officials,
have also registered police cases in 35 incidents for
indulging in distribution of illegal freebies like clothes,
watches and arms while 244 people have been arrested, a senior
official said.

Silver (around 6.7 kg), 3,500 umbrellas, 19 bicycles, and
more than 400 mosquito nets, sarees and shawls have been
seized till now from various parts of the state. All this
material was supposed to be distributed to voters to lure
them, the official said.

The I-T department, as part of the pre-poll surveillance
in the state also seized Rs 5.79 crore till now from various
places, he added.

Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 13.
