Chennai: Extending support to agitating teachers of government run schools who have been pressing for a charter of demands, including upward pay revision, DMK leader M K Stalin on Monday urged the state government to hold talks with them and address their grievances.

"On behalf of the DMK, I extend my support to the teachers and appeal to the AIADMK government to immediately call them for talks and address their demands," he said in a post on social media website 'Facebook'.

Teachers under the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers' Organisations' (JACTTO) staged a one day fast yesterday across the state urging the government to fulfill a 15-point charter of demands, including pay parity with Central government teachers.

"Teachers are the builders of the future of our nation and it is our duty to listen to their grievances. The AIADMK government is in deep slumber and not holding talks with the agitating teachers," he said.

JACTTO, a confederation of about 27 unions representing government teachers, has also been demanding regularising the services of contract teachers.

On March 8 this year, they organised processions in all district headquarters.
