Cases had been filed against Velmurugan under IPC 307 (attempt to murder) 147 (rioting) 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons) and 427(mischief).

Madurai: Madras High court bench on Thursday
criticised a a top police official in charge of Ramanathapuram
district for false information being given on filing a
chargesheet against a man involved in a quarrel with his
friends in which one person was stabbed in that town in 2009.

Justice R Mala asked the Superintendent of Police to be
present in court, after acertaining from court records that a
chargesheet had not been filed against Velmurugan, who had
sought bail from the High Court.

Cases had been filed against Velmurugan under IPC 307
(attempt to murder) 147 (rioting) 148 (rioting armed with
deadly weapons) and 427(mischief).

The judge said the SP had to supervise what was going on in
police stations as otherwise incidents like false
informations would recur.

She directed SP Paneerselvam, now in charge of Ramanathapuram
district, to file the chargesheet and report on August 27.

The Petitioner said he was the third accused and was not
involved in the incident and that the injured person had been
discharged. Investigation was also over.

He feared he would be harassed if he was arrested and
sought bail, saying he would not leave the area and was
willing to provide sureties.
