Heavy rain lashes Erode, LBP canal breaches

The vegetable arrivals to `Uzavar shandies` (market stalls) were also affected due to rain.

Erode (TN): The Lower Bhavani canal, near Moolapalayam, a suburb of Erode, breached on Monday following heaving rain, officials said.

PWD authorities have plugged the breach by placing several sand bags.

Rain water stagnated in some areas and people could not come out of their houses. Traffic was paralysed.

The district received widespread rain from 2 am to 6 am Kodivery in Gobichettipalayam taluk experienced rain of 200 mm in five hours from 1 am to 6 am on Monday.

Chennimalai recorded 108 mm, Arachalure 95 mm, Erode 84 mm, Sathyamangalam 78 mm, Gobichettipalayam 72 mm, Pungambadi 59
mm, Bhavani 55 mm, Perundurai 49 mm, Bhavanisagar 45 mm,
Elandaikuttaimedu 43 mm, Kangeyam 35.4 mm, Kavindapady 29 mm and Sivagiri 16 mm.

The water level in the Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir this morning was 85.41 feet against the full level of 105 feet. Inflow was 4032 cusecs while there was no discharge.

Forest officials said percolation ponds and other tanks inside Thalawady, Hassanure, Kadambur, Eratty and Burgur forest areas had filled up due to the rains.
