NHRC seeks explanation from Tamil Nadu gov​t on usage of Education Cess

The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government, seeking an explanation on usage of Education Cess fund provided by the Union Government for improving facilities in schools.

New Delhi/Chennai: The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government, seeking an explanation on usage of Education Cess fund provided by the Union Government for improving facilities in schools.

In a letter to Chief Secretary K Gnanadesikan, NHRC asked him to inform them how the government was using its share of the cess and also to state how much amount remained unused, NHRC said in a statement.

The chief secretary has also been asked to inform as to how much fund is lying unused and how the state government proposes to use this money.

The Tamil Nadu government has been given four weeks time to respond.

The Commission, taking cognizance of the complaint by an NGO, which had alleged that a huge amount of education cess remained unused, gave the state four weeks time to respond.
