Other state students in TN should learn Tamil: Jaya

Jayalalithaa said learning Tamil in schools was a must as similar practice was in place in states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Chennai: Students who have other languages
as their mother tongue should learn Tamil till Class 6 in all
schools across the state, Tamil Nadu government on Friday made it
clear in the Assembly.

"Students in Tamil Nadu have to learn Tamil as a
language. There is no change in that," Chief Minister
Jayalalithaa said, responding to a query by Congress member
Gopinath who said students from other states were finding it
difficult in view of lack of Tamil teachers.

Jayalalithaa said learning Tamil in schools was a must as
similar practice was in place in states like Karnataka and
Andhra Pradesh, where Kannada and Telugu were taught
compulsorily.

"The government will make necessary arrangements to
employ teachers. But, all students in Tamil Nadu have to learn
Tamil as a language," she said.
