People will take to streets if govt fails to check

The BJP in Tamil Nadu said people would be forced to take to the streets if government failed to check increasing incidents of breakdown of law and order and if police are not given full power to deal with it.

Coimbatore: The BJP in Tamil Nadu on Friday said people would be forced to take to the streets if government failed to check increasing incidents of breakdown of law and order and if police are not given full power to deal with it.

This could be the attacks on Dalits in Dharmapuri and on Hindu activists in various parts of the State and unearthing of explosives such as on the route taken by BJP leader L K Advani on his tour some time ago and at Tiruparankunnu in Madurai recently, BJP state president Pon Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

Stating that law and order situation in the State would take a turn for the worse if police are not given a free hand to tackle such incidents, he charged successive governments in Tamil Nadu with having failed to take action against a section of the people `due to vote bank politics.`

He alleged police had failed to take any action in nabbing those behind attacks on Hindu activists since 1980, including the 1998 serial blasts in Coimbatore and the recent attack on RSS secretary while they were `very active` in registering false cases against workers of Hindu outfits.

Government should either allow police to function freely or formulate new laws and strategy to contain `terror a activities`. Otherwise there every possibility people would come to streets to find solutions to their problems,he said.

He also charged government with failing to end the agitation in Idinthakarai, the nerve centre of the stir against Kudankulam Nuclear Powr Plant, which was evident that it wanted to play politics.

On the ongoing conference on Sri Lankan Tamils issue in London, he said though the party has not participated in it due to organisational polls, it had sent a message message, saying that Sri Lanka should be punished for `war crimes`.
