Pilgrims throng Vailankanni

Hundreds of devotees thronged the Shrine Basilica at Vailankanni in Nagapattinam district in connection with the Easter celebrations.

the Shrine Basilica at Vailankanni in Nagapattinam district in
connection with the Easter celebrations on Sunday.

Special prayers were held on the occasion.

Pilgrims from various parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala,
Karnataka and Maharashtra participated in the celebrations.
The special feature of the Easter celebrations is the
`padayatra` by hundreds of pilgrims from various places.
During the eight-day period between `Palm Sunday` and Easter
Sunday, pilgrims carry big, wooden crosses on their shoulders,
arrive at Vailankanni on foot and participate in the prayers.

The district administration and police had made elaborate
arrangements at Vailankanni in view of the week-long Easter
celebrations, which commenced on April one.
