Protest over abduction of Indian fishermen

According to police, others detained were Lok Sabha MP TKS Elangovan and party`s senior functionaries besides scores of DMK workers.

Chennai: Senior DMK leaders, including party`s Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, were arrested on Wednesday after they tried to take out a rally protesting the alleged abduction of over 100 Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan fishermen.

According to police, others detained were Lok Sabha MP TKS Elangovan and party`s senior functionaries besides scores of DMK workers.

The DMK activists tried to take out a rally to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission here in connection with the yesterday`s incident.

Earlier, Kanimozhi slammed the Sri Lankan government for the incident and demanded immediate release of the fishermen.

As many 106 fishermen belonging to three fishing hamlets of Nagapattinam district were allegedly abducted by a group of Sri Lankan fishermen while fishing off Kodiakarai coast and took them to Vadamarachi in Jaffna district of Sri Lanka.

The Indian fishermen were later handed over to the Lankan
authorities.
