Chennai: Insisting that the Tamil month of 'Thai' (January) was the Tamil New Year, DMK President M Karunanidhi today said Tamils should celebrate it in a grand manner.
Referring to his previous DMK government revising the calendar in 2008 in line with opinions of experts on the matter, he said the subsequent AIADMK government reverted to the practice of celebrating the New Year during the Tamil month of 'Chitirai' in April, only because it was a DMK initiative.
"I request Tamils to come forward to celebrate the first day of Thai (also the Pongal harvest festival) as the New Year in a grand manner," he said in a statement here.
He recalled that his party General Council on January 9 had adopted a resolution in this regard.
