Thirumavalan moves HC seeking police protection

Thol Thirumavalavan, president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to police to provide him protection till the completion of Lok Sabha polls.

Chennai: Thol Thirumavalavan, president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, on Thursday moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to police to provide him protection till the completion of Lok Sabha polls.
He submitted that he is an MP representing Chidambaram Lok Sabha constituency and also a candidate for Lok Sabha polls from the constituency.

As the president of the party, he has to canvass for his party candidates throughout Tamil Nadu besides the candidates fielded by the DMK-led alliance.

He submitted that in the recent past criminal elements having affiliation with some caste and communal forces attacked him in some places.

A complaint was lodged against the attacks to the police and security cover sought for him, but there was no response till date from the police, following which it may not be possible for him to discharge his democratic and fundamental right to move freely for canvassing, he submitted.

Justice C T Selvam ordered issue of notice to Public Prosecutor and posted the matter for further hearing to March 25.
