VAOs go on one-day strike in Cuddalore taluk

Village Administrative Officers in cyclone Thane-ravaged Cuddalore taluk went on a day`s strike, protesting against alleged attacks on them by people demanding higher relief amount.

"Seven VAOs have been attacked by public over the past
three days," R Natarajan, President, Taluk Village
Administrative Officers Association, said.

"The VAOs are distributing cyclone relief amount as per
the state government`s guidelines. The government has fixed Rs
2,500 as compensation for partly damaged houses, but those
affected are demanding Rs 5,000 per house and attacking
officials," he said.

To condemn this, VAOs staged a one-day strike in Cuddalore
taluk and abstained from work, he said.

Cuddalore district, comprising eight taluks, was badly
affected by the cyclonic storm that crossed the coast on
December 30, claiming 39 lives.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Cuddalore Collectior V Amutha
Valli said the district administration has distributed Rs 55
crore as compensation for damaged houses.
