Lucknow: BJP legislators on Thursday staged a walkout from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on the alleged increasing cases of slaughtering of milch animals, specially cows, in the state.
The issue was raised by the BJP members during the Zero Hour through an adjournment notice demanding an immediate debate on the issue in the state`s Upper House.

They alleged that milk-producing animals, specially cows, were being slaughtered in the state on a large scale everyday and lakhs of tonnes of meat was being exported to foreign countries.

The members also alleged that due to this, the number of milk-producing animals was "declining".

Leader of BJP group Hriday Narain Dixit alleged that the SP government has failed to check cattle smuggling and slaughter.

He said such incidents increase whenever SP comes to power and no action was taken by police.

In his reply, Leader of the House Ahmad Hasan alleged that the Opposition members were defaming the government and it had nowhere failed in checking smuggling and slaughter of cattle.

He said prohibitory law was effective in the state and stern action has been taken in cases of violation, and added the allegation was baseless.

Dissatisfied with the reply of the government the BJP members walked out of the House.

Rejecting the notice, Chairman Ganesh Shanker Pandey asked to take appropriate steps to "check cow slaughter".
