Ghaziabad: Facing opposition from their
families and the village panchayat, a couple ended their lives
with the boy allegedly shooting her girlfriend dead before
killing self in Muradnagar area here.

Bodies of the couple were found yesterday in jungles
near Dhindar village of the district, police said today.

Mohit(20) and Aruna (16) were in a relationship which
was objected by their families and also the village panchayat,
police said.
Due to the same gotra the panchayat had directed the
couple to break their ties, the police said.

Prima facie it appears that first the boy shot the girl
dead and then killed himself, they said.

The bodies have been sent for the post mortem, police
said.

Suspicion of honour killing is also doing round in the
village, they said.

The case will be investigated and if it is found to be a
case of murder we will take action, Senior Superintendent of
Police Raghubir Lal said.

Talking to journalists after the meet, chief minister
Mukul Sangma said, "We shall see and examine how to structure
this concept to make it adaptable and implementable in
conformity with the given situation in the state".
He added that there was ?no conflict? with the
existing tradition and practice.

"We are successfully implementing flagship programmes
of the Centre through village employment councils," the
chief minister claimed even as he pointed out that the
existing system was "apolotical" and "doing well" involving
people in implementation of the welfare schemes.

Deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong, who holds the law
portfolio hinted that the existing grassroots tribal
administrative bodies like the Dorbar Shnongs, Nokmaships and
Doloiships could be empowered.

"Who does not want power,? he asked even as he
emphasized that people would not accept any change or dilution
of the culture, tradition and practice that has been existing
for ages.

"We have to examine the Government of India proposal
and see how best to ring in a system acceptable to the people.
We will need time to study the proposal before introducing any
change," Lanong emphasized.
