Husband of a Panchayat election candidate was shot dead by allegedly unidentified persons over political rivalry in Deogaon area here, police said on Monday.

Azamgarh: Husband of a Panchayat election candidate was shot dead by allegedly unidentified persons over political rivalry in Deogaon area here, police said on Monday.

37-year-old Sahab Lal Ram, whose wife is contesting for block development committee, was shot dead last night when he was returning home after campaigning, they said.

He was killed allegedly over panchayat poll-related rivalry, police said.

An FIR has been lodged and efforts were being made to identify the killers, police said.

Polling for Panchayat Elections in Uttar Pradesh began on October 9 and will continue till October 29.

The Panchayat polls in the state are scheduled to to be held in four phases - October 9, 13, 17 and 29.
