A policeman was killed and five others were injured after being attacked allegedly by a group of juveniles for preventing them from misbehaving with women.

Meerut: A policeman was killed and five others were injured after being attacked allegedly by a group of juveniles for preventing them from misbehaving with women.

Omprakash, a constable posted at the police line here was killed and five others injured after being attacked by 16 juveniles on Thursday while returning from a court hearing, District Magistrate Pankaj Yadav told PTI.

The incident occurred when the juveniles belonging to Surajkund observation home were taken from Meerut to Bulandshahr for a court hearing.

The juveniles started making obscene gestures at the passing-by women on their way back, that was objected by the police officers, he said, adding that the accused threatened the officers.

Around 12 additional police personnels were deployed at the correction home following the threats, Yadav said.

The juveniles attacked the police force with the help of other inmates while they were being taken inside the correction home here, he said.

Omprakash succumbed to his injuries on Friday, while the other injured officers have been released from the hospital, Yadav said.

The body has been sent for post mortem, he said, adding that a magisterial probe was today ordered into the incident.

An FIR has been registered against 25 juveniles and 125 unidentified people under various sections of IPC.

The DM has asked for a report from the city officials within a week.

The Meerut observation home with a capacity of 100, houses 225 juveniles at present. The inmates have been brought from Gautam Budh Nagar, Hapud, Ghaziabad and Bagpat divisions.
