Allahabad: A device, suspected to be a bomb, was found close to a railway station in a remote part of the district early this morning, sending police and railway officials into a tizzy.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Dubey, the device which "looked like a bomb with a timer attached" was spotted close to the Meja Road station, about 40 km from the city, at about 9 am.

"A police party was rushed to the spot from the local police station and the surrounding area has been cordoned off. The bomb disposal squad has been informed and they would be reaching the spot shortly. Further investigations would reveal who had placed the device on the spot and why," he added.

Railway traffic on the busy Delhi-Howrah route was affected for a brief period following information about the device lying at a spot close to the tracks.

"For about half an hour movement of trains was suspended. The same has been resumed as it was found by officials concerned that the spot where the device was lying was not close enough to affect the tracks," North Central Railway spokesman Amit Malviya said.
