New Delhi: In a daring jailbreak, two undertrials dug a tunnel in the country's most secure prison, Tihar jail, and managed to escape.
While one of the convict Faizan was caught, Javed is still at large, as per news reports.
Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain was quoted as saying by ANI, “Magisterial inquiry has been ordered. Some officials have been transferred immediately.”
While Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a report from the Tihar jail authorities, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident directing District Magistrate (South West) Ankur Garg to probe the matter and sought a report within a week.
The two convicts, who were in jail for burglary, reportedly scaled the wall and then dug a tunnel linking to the boundary of the prison complex on Saturday night.
Their absence could be detected only on Sunday night after they failed to respond to their roll call.
An alert was immediately sounded and a search led the jail officials to the tunnel.
“On June 27th evening, two inmates from ward number 4 went missing. We caught one of the inmates who escaped while the other is still missing. An inquiry has been ordered,” Mukesh Prasad, DIG Tihar Jail, was quoted by ANI.
Delhi Police has been alerted, and its officials are are now searching for the missing undertrial.
Kiran Bedi, former Inspector General Prisons of Tihar Jail, took to Twitter and tweeted, "the escape reported from Tihar Prison is indicative of weakening of certain administrative & oversight practices,when followed,cannot occur.”

Tihar Central jail has a three-layer security and houses several high-profile inmates including politicians like former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar and accused Naxalite Kobad Ghandy.
