American businesses want transparency, rule of law in WB

Although US businesses have a positive outlook about investments in West Bengal, they need to be assured of transparency, rule of law and rewards for their risks before investing, US Ambassador in India Timothy Roemer said.

Kolkata: Although US businesses have a
positive outlook about investments in West Bengal, they need
to be assured of transparency, equal opportunities, rule of
law and rewards for their risks before investing, US
Ambassador in India Timothy Roemer said on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, I had an interaction with the American
Chamber of Commerce about the environment here and business
opportunities. People working on the ground are positive
(about the state)," Roemer told a press conference.

"At the same time, they are saying what American
businesses say throughout India and the world -- that there
should be transparency, rule or law, equal opportunities and
rewards for risks. I think once these things are in place,
there can be a positive outcome," he said.

Citing the presence of Frito Lay as a successful example
of US investment in West Bengal, he said the state held a lot
of investment opportunities in mining, infrastructure and
other business areas.

Roemer, who met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
yesterday, said he had found the latter to be "engaging,
personable and experienced."
