Kolkata: CPI(M) leader Tapas Chatterjee on Wednesday joined Trinamool Congress and was expelled minutes after from the Left party, with which he was having a strained relationship soon after.

Chatterjee, who was chairman of Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality in North 24 Parganas, accused CPI(M) of moving away from the basic ideology of communism.

He joined TMC in presence of the party secretary general Partha Chatterjee and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.

"I want to take part in the developmental process initiated by Mamata Banerjee. CPI(M) has moved away from the basic core ideologies of communism. I don't want to be part of that party," Chatterjee said.

CPI(M) district secretary Gautam Deb today in a statement said Chatterjee has been expelled from the party as he has been hand in gloves with the TMC even when he was in the party.
