Kolkata: An NGO on Wednesday demanded that the police take legal action against former Supreme Court judge Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly in the case of alleged sexual harassment of a law intern saying that he could exert his influence.

"Necessary police action as per law, when such a serious complaint has been raised, should be taken immediately," Vineet Ruia President of NGO Bharat Bachao Sangsthan, which had recently staged a protest outside the office of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission of which Justice Ganguly is the chairman, told reporters here.

"He being a man of position, he can influence the witnesses and the process of investigation. So we think that he should immediately step down from his post of chairman of WBHRC," Ruia said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) D P Singh told PTI "We have received a letter from them (NGO)."

The letter was submitted to the Hare Street police station.

The police assured them that they would look into the matter, the NGO said, denying any political inclination.
