Kolkata: An FIR was filed against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee in Jorasanko police station on Tuesday for publicly threatening to "chop off hands and tear out eyes" of those who dared to challenge Trinamool Congress.

Abhishek, a Lok Sabha member from Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas district made the the outrageous remarks while addressing a party rally in Basirhat in North 24-Parganas on Monday.

"Those who dare to show their eyes, we will tear it out and throw it on the streets. If someone shows us their hands we will cut them off. But you have to remember that in democracy, it is the common man who will say the last word," Abhishek said yesterday while addressing the rally.

The president of Trinamool Congress’ youth wing also trained his gun at Narendra Modi and said that most of the political parties have fallen on the feet of the Prime Minister, but TMC did not.

The TMC MPs have shown that they would not spare anyone who tries to exploit the people of West Bengal, said Abhishek while addressing party workers in the run-up to the July 21 Martyr's Day Rally in Basirhat area of North 24 Parganas.

The Trinamool Congress observes July 21 as the Martyrs' Day in the memory of 13 people who were shot dead in 1993 in police firing on a Youth Congress rally led by Mamata Banerjee, then a Youth Congress leader.

The remarks have been widely condemned by the political parties.

Criticising Abhishek's comments BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said, "The comments are the reflection of the DNA of Trinamool Congress. This is what is expected of TMC and its leaders.”

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP Mohammad Salim said: "All other parties, unfortunately, have some elements like these, but the Trinamool actually is a party of hooligans and goons. In Bengal, there is no rule of law, the police will never take action because under Mamata government, police themselves are being assaulted and getting killed."

"The remarks made by Abhishek are condemnable, Indian politics doesn't permit anyone to say such things. This in no way is going to help Mamata Banerjee and her party rather it will do damage," said Congress leader Meem Afzal.

Several other Trinamool leaders too have been under the spotlight for making hate speeches.
