Five killed, 30 injured in bus mishap

Five persons including three Madhyamik (secondary examination) examinees were on Monday killed and 30 others injured when a bus overturned in Jalpaiguri district, a senior police officer said.

Jalpaiguri: Five persons including three Madhyamik (secondary examination) examinees were on Monday killed and 30 others injured when a bus overturned in Jalpaiguri district, a senior police officer said.

The incident took place when the bus, in which over 30 people including students were returning from an examination centre after giving their secondary level exams at Jamaldaha in the district turned turtle near Jalpaiguri.

As locals started rescue operation, five persons including three madhyamik examinees were found dead while 30 others had to be taken to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, Mekhliganj Hospital and Jamaldaha Hospital, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Yadav said.

Eyewitnesses said the toll could be higher.

An attending doctor said condition of some the injured was serious but most of them were in stable condition.

While some of them were given first aid, others went home with their parents.

The students were on way to neighbouring Coochbehar district.
