Kolkata: Heavy rains lashed the city on Monday disrupting train services and creating traffic snarls on waterlogged major arterial roads.

The steady drizzle intensified in the evening as many of the areas in the south and central Kolkata went under ankle-deep to waist-high water.

Trees were also uprooted in several areas giving commuters, including people returning from offices, a tough time.

Train movement was hit over both Howrah and Sealdah divisions.

"Train movement is slow, but there is no cancellation. Three platforms in Sealdah are waterlogged. Water has been drained out by deploying pumps," said an Eastern Railway spokesman.

"In Howrah section, Tikiapara carshed was waterlogged So train movement was affected. No long distance train has been cancelled. But from safety point of view, we are bringing them slowly into the platform."

The situation is unlikely to improve as the met department has predicted heavy to moderate rains in several districts of south West Bengal as well as the city in the next two days.
