A large number of devotees visited Kalighat and Dakhineswar Kali temples during the day to offer prayers to the goddess on the auspicious day.
Devotees also stood in long queues at the Tarapith temple in Birbhum district to offer puja.
Residential houses and public places were illuminated with candles and decorative lamps while people use fireworks as part of the festivity.
To keep the celebration peaceful, security was beefed up in and around the city.
Like previous years, Kali Puja was also performed at the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kalighat area, which many political leaders and other dignitaries and celebrities visited.
"Like every year, Kali Puja is being celebrated in my home. Thousands of people have come from different places," Banerjee said in a Tweet.
