Kolkata: Senior Congress leader Pranab
Mukherjee will take a class for newly-elected party MLAs in
West Bengal to help them understand the proceedings in the
Assembly, their rights and duties.
"Mukherjee, who was a lecturer in political science in
a South 24-Parganas district college before joining politics
in the early 1960s, will take a class on House norms for the
newly elected MLAs on Friday," state Congress president Pradip
Bhattacharjee said.
"This type of meeting used to take place earlier also.
But it has a significance this time since Congress is now a
coalition partner in the new government," Bhattacharjee said.
At an earlier meeting in May, Mukherjee had ordered the
newly-elected Congress MLAs in West Bengal to be present in
the Assembly during its sessions and be part of the
proceedings.
A parliamentarian of long standing, the Union Finance
Minister had said there cannot be anything more important than
participation in House proceedings.
Of the 42 Congress legislators, 27 are first-timers.
