Saradha scam: CBI summon doesn't prove Madan Mitra guilty, says Mukherjee

Claiming that efforts are being made to malign Trinamool Congress in the Saradha scam, senior party leader Subrata Mukherjee on Wednesday defended his colleague Madan Mitra, who has been summoned by CBI, saying it does not prove anyone guilty.

Kolkata: Claiming that efforts are being made to malign Trinamool Congress in the Saradha scam, senior party leader Subrata Mukherjee on Wednesday defended his colleague Madan Mitra, who has been summoned by CBI, saying it does not prove anyone guilty.

"CBI can summon anyone they like. But if someone is summoned by CBI it doesn't prove him guilty," Mukherjee told reporters on the sidelines of a programme here when asked to comment on the central investigating agency summoning Mitra.

When scribes told him that CBI had summoned Mitra on the basis of evidence, Mukherjee, who is also state Panchayat minister, said, "It is for CBI to prove to if someone is guilty. Let CBI prove it first. Before being proved that someone is guilty, it is not in good taste to brand him guilty. Efforts are being made to malign TMC and the government."

CBI special crime branch probing the Saradha scam, has served summons on West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra to appear before the agency officials for interogation in relation to it.

Mukherjee's cabinet colleague, state Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim said law will take its own course in the investigation of the Saradha scam.
