Austin: At least two people were killed in Arkansas and another 10 unaccounted for in Texas after a series of tornadoes hit the Great Plains states overnight, flattening buildings and injuring dozens, local officials said on Monday.

Two people were killed and two others were severely injured by a tornado that hit a trailer park in the western Arkansas county of Howard, according to local authorities.

"We got several homes heavily damaged and two churches probably destroyed," said Chief Deputy John Glidewell of the Howard County sheriff’s office.

At least 26 people were injured and 10 adults unaccounted for following a tornado that hit Van Zandt County, Texas, southeast of Dallas, Emergency Management Coordinator and Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Chuck Allen told a news conference, TV broadcaster WFAA reported.

Allen said workers with dogs trained to search for people will be going over the wreckage to look for other victims.

About two dozen tornadoes were reported in a region stretching from Texas to South Dakota from storm systems on Sunday that brought heavy rain, hail, high winds and flooding, the National Weather Service reported.
